An irresistible doubling of flavor due to the double maturation in two barrels made of American Oak. Still-maturing whisky from our standard ex-bourbon barrels is transferred to quarter casks and left to rest in our warehouse just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic shore. This process represents LaphroaigŪ breathing new life into a once-defunct tradition: the use of the smaller cask size, which ensures increased contact with the oak, creating a soft and velvety edge to complement Laphroaig’sŪ distinctive peatiness.
The world’s #1 selling Islay single malt Scotch whisky
The most richly flavored of all Scotch whiskies
Complex and unique flavor of Laphroaig due to our water, peat, and malted barley
Smoke and oak sweetness
Non-chill filtered expression that employs small casks, allowing the maturing spirit 30% more contact with wood. The increased oak influence imparts a special wood character to the spiirt
Color: sparkling gold Nose: burning embers of peat in a crofter’s fireplace, hints of coconut and banana aromas Finish: incredibly long and dry Body: Full Palate: deep, complex and smoky, yet surprises the palate with a gentle sweetness
The additional oak influence creates a soft sweetness and velvety feel when first tasted, then the intense peatiness so unique to Laphroaig, comes bursting through. The finish is very long and alternates between the sweetness and the peat.
This expression is aged for approximately 5 years in bourbon barrels before spending a final few months in quarter casks. Characteristic tar, engine oil, and ashy peat on the nose. Oily and full on the palate, with sweet grain notes, cinnamon, seaweed, hot peat, and black pepper. The finish is long and powerful, with persistent peat and chili, plus a sprinkling of sea salt.
The first nosings find clean, apple peel-like and peat-free scents; later inhalations find a more sea breeze like, mildly briny character. Palate entry is lean, earthy, moderately smoky and lemony; midpalate is oily with flavors of ash, peat, sweet malt and brine. Concludes sweet, peaty and cigarette ash-like, with a bite of green olive.
