With the 2005 vintage, for the first time in history, the GAJA family decided to produce a classic Brunello without single vineyard designation, blended from all 40 acres the family has planted throughout the entire region. Pieve Santa Restituta's Brunello di Montalcino is now produced from a selection of estate-grown grapes from throughout the winery’s four non-contiguous vineyards as well as 25 acres of southwest facing vineyards in Torrenieri, in northeastern Montalcino, acquired in 2006.
2013 - Deep garnet color. The 2013 Brunello shows complex and fresh fruity aromas: red currant, sour cherry, quince. The nose displays notes of juniper and laurel leaves. The palate expresses a concentrated sweetness, with plum and cherry notes of stone fruits. The texture is smooth and juicy with round tannins and bright freshness. The wine is persistent and elegant.
2015 - Deep garnet color. Charming notes of juniper berries, licorice and sweet wood greet your nose. The 2015 Brunello has a very clear expression of sweet and ripe fruit, opening on the palate, with notes of spice and earthy aromatic herbs. This wine has remarkable texture, mouth-filling fruit and a very good length.
Montalcino is a romantic, medieval town surrounded by hills and dense woods. The soil, altitude and lush topography make it the ideal home for the Sangiovese grape, and the area's celebrated Brunello di Montalcino wine.
In his quest for wines that are the highest expression of the land on which they are grown, Angelo Gaja set his sites on Tuscany. In 1994, Gaja acquired Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino. This was his first venture outside the borders of his native Piedmont.
A "pieve" is a parish church, and the estate itself is named for the church that stands on the property. According to church records, wine has been produced here since the 12th century. With respect for the estate's heritage and an awareness of its great potential, GAJA improved the vineyards and renovated the winery.
Producer The Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. Giovanni Gaja was the great-grandfather of Angelo Gaja, the Winery s current owner. In 1994, GAJA acquired its first wine estate in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino. This estate produces three Brunello di Montalcino wines- including the single vineyard Sugarille- from vineyard holdings totaling sixty five acres. In 1996 Gaja acquired a second property in Tuscany, Ca Marcanda, located in Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri. Of the property s 200 acres, 150 have been planted with new vineyards: primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as Cabernet Franc and Syrah.BottleCurrently, the Gaja Winery owns 250 acres of vineyards in Piedmont, located in the Barbaresco district (Barbaresco and Treiso) and the Barolo district (Serralunga d Alba and La Morra).Since its inception, the Gaja Winery has continuously evolved in ways that have always focused on meticulous care of and attention to the quality of its wines.
2013 - 92 Points Full ruby-red. Aromas of red cherry, blackberry, licorice and minerals. Juicy and tightly wound but pliant, offering smooth black and red fruit flavors complicated by licorice and fresh herbs. Classically dry and long, finishing with supple but firm tannins and a bright floral element. It’s hard to argue with this entry-level Brunello’s quality. I find it to be slightly underrated in many vintages, as all the attention is focused on Gaja’s two top Brunellos, the Rennina and the Sugarille. But this non-cru Brunello offers lots of high-quality wine for the price.
