The Märzen name means "March" in German, since Oktoberfest beer is brewed in the spring and aged to perfection until tapped during the annual fall Bavarian beer festival. (Often written incorrectly as "Marzen" - without the proper German umlaut - or alternatively "Maerzen" where "ae" is an accepted way to write an "ä.")
